Workshops

We can announce all the workshops. Hurray! Including time and location. Please check the descriptions. De workshops are in 3 different locations: 1 danceworkshop is in the OGtent, 2 danceworkshops are at the Visserlaan 35 (20 minute walk from the OGtent) and the music workshops in primary school Remigius (5 minute walk from the OGtent).

The weekendtickets are including all the workshops, so you don't have to pay seperatly for the workshops. For the dance workshop you don't have to register either, you just have to show up in time at the right location. Be in time, if the workshop is getting too full, the teacher can say that no new people can join.

For the music workshops there is a maximum of participants, so it is important that you register and mention your music experience and the instrument(s) you play. Registration works by sending a mail to or if the workshops aren't full, you can register at the entrance of the festival.

The workshops are not included in the daytickets, so if you want to join 1 or more workshops, you can buy a workshop pass at the festival. This costs 10 euro and gives you entrance to all workshops.

Thursday 22nd of October

Introduction dance workshop 19:00 - 20:00

For everybody who never danced Balfolk before, we start this festival with an introduction workshop. In this workshop we will learn you the basics of some of the most common dances, and after it you will know enough to have fun on the dancefloor.

Friday 23rd of October

Dance

Komred - Bourree auvergnate 13:00-17:30 »
How can you adress the bourree auvergnate (3 times) in a way that everybody can give his personale twist to it, and that you know how to communicate this while dancing? We're going to have a closer look at the bourree with 2 (from Artense and Combrailles).

After practising the step and different ways of deplacement, we will see that this is a dance about exchanging. Everybody can do this in his own way, between music and dance, between dancepartners, space, energy, freedom, play, connection and improvisation...

Everybody can join, beginners and advanced dancers, everybody who wants to learn more about the bourree auvergnate.

Location: Visserlaan 35
Time: 13:00-17:30

Biodanza Duiven - Biodanza 13:00-15:00 »
Biodanza literally means: Dance of Life. It takes you out of your head (thinking) and brings you closer to your body (to your feelings). At Biodanza we dance to the themes of life. It is not about pretty and trained steps, but about expressing who you are in this moment, in your own way. It is about getting in touch with all your potential. Challenge yourself to show yourself more and more in your own authentic way.

We dance on bare feet to all sorts of music. There are dances we dance alone, in couples, small groups or the entire group. Dances that are fiery and dances that are slow. Everything will be covered. You are requested to not speak while dancing, because talking brings us back into our head, away from our feelings. Of course you can sing along, as singing enhances our connection to our feelings.

Other than that there is only one rule: take care of yourself and keep others in mind when moving. We look forward to sharing a little bit of Biodanza with you and would like to welcome you in advance.

Location: OGtent
Time: 13:00-15:00

Koen Dhondt - Rhythmical variations for Scottish 13:00-15:00 »

Time: 13:00-15:00

Koen Dhondt - Variations for scottish: direction of rotation 15:30-17:30 »
You will learn how to change your direction of rotation while dancing. As a couple you will alternate rotation clockwise and counter clockwise at different points in the dance. After that you will discover the so-called “salsa”-variations for scottish (single, triple and half salsa) and different versions of the “8-out” variation. To conclude the workshop you will combine both variations.

Experienced dancers only: Your basic steps and form should be flawless and automatic. The teachers reserve the right to deny access to this workshop to dancers who do not possess the required skills.

Wouter Kuyper - First encounter with the diatonic accordeon 13:00-15:00 »
One of the most used instruments in Balfolk is the diatonic accordion. While it is a great to listen and dance to the diatonic accordion, it is also a very accessible instrument to play. Where the violin or bagpipes require years of practice before you will be able to produce a pleasant sound, with the diatonic accordion you only have to press the right button and push or draw the bellows at the right moment. Of course, producing truly good music requires a lot more, but even in a few hours you can learn the basic techniques and play an actual tune.

This is what Wouter Kuyper will be doing this afternoon: teaching a workshop where he will explain the basics of playing the diatonic accordion en then letting you try them out. You will have a chance to ask questions and receive feedback. This workshop is aimed at everyone who is curious about this instrument.

What is also nice is that you do not need your own accordion for this workshop. A number of instruments will be made available.

Dance

Saskia Sportel - Vary with rhythm and 'verticality' 11:00-13:00 »
Have you ever noticed that you would rather dance differently to one band than to the other? Cadansa is very diverse this year with new and traditional styles. Therefore, we go in-depth by varying rhythm and `verticality` to flexibly adapt our individual dance style to a music style. You might imagine the difference between a hum-pah-pa mazurka and a romantic mazurka. With these techniques we will discover how you can invite any dance partner to join you in this. It will be both a technical and musical adventure. And the best part: this is not only reflected in couple dances but, for example, also in rondeaus and bourrées.

This workshop is for advanced dancers. We expect you to be able to dance the basics of some dances like mazurka and rondeau and feel comfortable enough to let go is the basics again.

Location: Visserlaan 35
Time: 11:00-13:00

Volksdansverening Zevenaar - International dance 11:00-13:00 »

Sara & Paulo - A guide to get lost 13:30-15:30 »
Perceiving dance as a dialogue in its whole, in this workshop our main goal is not to teach dancers how to dance, but to enable them to enhance their ability to sense, listen, react, interpret, create and therefore, talk with each other without words. Mainly focusing on mazurka, scottish and waltz, let's dive in our bodies boundaries and languages so we can explore dance however we feel like it.

Level: Intermediate upto advanced. Dancers must be confident on the basic steps of mazurka, scottish and waltz.

Location: Visserlaan 35
Time: 13:30-15:30

Jolanda Snellenberg - Couple dances for beginners 13:30-15:30 »
You don't have that much experience yet, but you want to dance as much as possible? We'll make sure that the rest of the festival you'll be able to! We'll briefly look at the steps of the Scottish and the Mazurka, but we'll spend most time on all kinds of other aspects of dancing: dancing together, a good posture, etiquette and doing variations without knowing any. All these things are invaluable skills for all the dances you will do the rest of your life, or at least the rest of the festival.

Music

La jupette barbue - Playing with rhytms of body and voice 11:00-13:00 »
This workshop is about rhythm.
We take time to feel the pulsation of the beat, to anchor ourselves. Through games and nice experience we take the group to enter little by little the pulsation, with construction of rhythm, reproduction, question and answering, polyrhythm, body percussion, walking on rhythm...
Finally we are more anchored to listen and feel the rhythm and the pulse of the music/dance.

He will teach you a simple tune (by ear), and working on dynamics and accompaniment, using the modality of the tune to guide our chords choice. It will be a tune from Poitou, the region where Lucas grew up.

The workshop will be for (semi) advanced players, you need a GC (sol-do) accordion, and you need to be able to learn a simple tune quickly, so we can dive in the rest of the material.
